Special interest in Exotic species

At the South Beech Veterinary Surgery, we not only care for dogs and cats, but the veterinary team also has a special interest in the treatment of exotic species, including raptors,  parrots, primates, lizards, snakes and other unusual pets.

Facilities include closed-circuit anaesthesia with a respirator using Isoflurane, radiography, ultrasonography, electrocardiography, video endoscopy, radiosurgery and cryosurgery. Our well-equipped diagnostic in-house laboratory includes a microbiological safety cabinet, clinical photometer, haematology and bacteriology.
A dedicated heated exotic ward with hospital cages and vivaria is available to accommodate both small animals and exotic pets. The nursing staff are fully trained and have years of experience in the handling and nursing of exotic species.

New Equipment for better Pet Health Care:

In addition to other specialised equipment we have a thin rigid endoscope which allows us to see into the major organs of animals to investigate problems. Recently we diagnosed a tortoise as being “egg bound” without the need for invasive surgery. The endoscope allows us to see down the major airways and digestive tract of cats dogs and many exotic species allowing us to investigate and take pictures.

The pictures are quite exciting to see on the video screen, but it takes a lot of expertise and practice to interpret them. These pictures also allow us the opportunity to explain our findings more clearly to clients.
