One of the largest and most advanced veterinary specialist referral centres in the UK, Bristol Vet Specialists, is enhancing its specialist cardiology team with the recruitment of Kieran Borgeat, a RCVS Recognised Specialist in Veterinary Cardiology for over 10 years.

At Bristol Vet Specialists, Kieran will help to open a minimally invasive mitral repair surgery programme in collaboration with the Royal Veterinary College, and develop satellite clinics in primary care practices across the region. He will also support the opening of a dedicated clinic for pedigree dog and cat heart screening, to support improvements to breed health. In addition, he is working on several cardiology research projects in collaboration with primary care and referral clinics all over the UK.

Graduating in 2005 from the University of Bristol, then undertaking a combined Residency and Master’s degree at the Royal Veterinary College, Kieran has worked as a Diplomate in a range of environments: in private referral practice, at a veterinary teaching hospital, and at senior leadership level. He has published over 40 peer-reviewed articles, pioneered numerous minimally invasive cardiovascular surgical techniques, and trained vets all over the world in cardiology techniques. He is also co-host of The Animal Heartbeat, an award-winning veterinary cardiology podcast.

As a specialist, Kieran is driven to inspire and share knowledge with other vets. One memorable career highlight was training a group of motivated vets in South Korean in 2017, on minimally invasive surgery, and three of those vets going on to develop the Korean Society of Veterinary Cardiology, upskilling hundreds of vets across the country in cardiovascular medicine, making a difference to thousands of animals' lives.

Bristol Vet Specialists is an amazing hospital with an expert multi-disciplinary team, providing the best care possible to pets when they need it most. With our amazing team of vets, nurses and support staff in cardiology - and as part of the wider multidisciplinary team - we are able to put in a pacemaker for urgent, out-of-hours cases, and also offer a relatable, clearly communicative service for pet owners and referring vets.

Our facilities and skills also give us huge potential to increase the cardiology services we offer. We are expanding all aspects of cardiology, with an ACVIM-accredited residency programme to train the next generation of Diplomates and a 24/7 cardiology backup for our emergency services. Being part of a group like CVS also has great potential for collaboration with primary care vets on meaningful, large scale clinical data - for quality improvement and research projects.
